Whitney Wolfe, Other Former Tinder Employees To Launch Direct Competitor Called Bumble | TechCrunch

bumble

A bunch of ex-Tinder staff have left to start a competing service. They may or may not have raised several million dollars. This reminds me of the mass staff exodus from JDate who left to start a competing site. That site lasted a year then faded into oblivion.

Whitney Wolfe, an early employee at Tinder who sued the company for sexual harassment and workplace discrimination, has joined up with two other early Tinder employees, Chris Gulczynski and his parnter Sarah Mick (cofounders of YayNext), to launch a direct competitor to Tinder called Bumble, sources tell TechCrunch.

The company, which is officially called Moxco Limited, lists its place of business in London, according to the privacy policy. But you can see from the Instagram accounts of Gulczynski and Mick that the team has been traveling quite a bit. There was a trip to Greece on a private plane, where they stayed in a villa, and then to Paris. Not to mention multiple trips to and from London and Los Angeles.

Sexcapades, lawyers  and private jets, I’d love to meet the people who funded Bumble, they have stomaches made of iron to deal with all of the drama.

There is little chance of this turning out well. Generic app and too many strikes against them already.

I know this in part because they state, “We suggest you read this in conjunction with our brilliant Terms and Conditions of Use.” Who does that? Signs of too cool for school indeed.

Dating App The Grade is Tinder With Report Cards

Posted: 08 Dec 2014 02:24 PM PST

The Grade dating
SNAP Interactive, creators of Are You Interested, have launched a new dating app called The Grade, which bans “failing singles.”

The Grade, which uses an algorithm to assign letter grades to users ranging from “A+” to “F,” is to create a community of high-quality daters.  By expelling low-quality users who receive an “F” grade, The Grade enables users to have a high-quality experience by viewing potential matches without sifting through hundreds of undesirable, inappropriate, and unresponsive people.

Grades are based on entirely objective criteria and are determined by a sophisticated algorithm that analyzes user behavior based on three categories – popularity, responsiveness, and message quality.  Users must maintain one of the passing dating “grades,” ranging from “A+” to “D,” while users who are undesirable or behave poorly will receive a failing “F” grade, and will be expelled from using the app.  Users are given instructions on how to improve their grades and receive a warning if they fall below a “C” grade.

The popularity grade is based on the quality of a user’s profile and incorporates how often a person is liked on the app.  The response rate grade is based on how often a user responds to messages and gets a response back.  The message quality grade is based on the content of a person’s messages and checks for spelling mistakes, use of slang, and inappropriate words.   The three categories combine to make up a user’s overall grade, which is visible for other users to see.

Dating App The Grade

If you are expelled from The Grade, you can appeal the decision.

“Please explain why we should reconsider your membership for The Grade. The Grade is a place for high quality people looking to meet other high quality people.  If your appeal is successfully reviewed, please visit The Grade in  5-7 days and you will be let back in.”

I’d gather that expelled people are pushed to a person somewhere like the Phillipines who then reviews their appeal, and decides whether or not to let them back on the service.

I have to say, I was not impressed that the Appeal process was driven by a mailto: link. Kind of killed the excitement of being banned and trying to get back on.

The Grade is basically Tinder with a report card. I like the direction they went in, but I think there needs to be more transparency into their algorithm that analyzes user popularity, responsiveness, and message quality. Give it a shot and let us know what you think in the comments.

15 Things Not To Do At Your Office Christmas Party

Posted: 04 Dec 2014 05:00 PM PST

Office holiday party
Christmas is quickly approaching and it’s almost time for the biggest event in your work social calendar – the notorious office Christmas party!
Being single, you can’t wait. You’ve had a crush on the office hottie ever since he started but have never got further than a flirty smile and the odd wink when passing in the lift. Now is your time to shine – but beware. Office Christmas parties are known for being the time of ‘embarrassing incidents’, and if you’re the unlucky one, they could haunt you and tarnish your reputation.

To help ensure that the party of the year runs smoothly, here’s the office Christmas ‘what not to do’ manual:

1) Don’t dress inappropriately
This is your time to impress, so don’t ruin your chance. Guys, think cool and sophisticated like Michael Bublé. Smart, casual…and if you must, wear a Christmas tie, but don’t be tempted to wear your comedy ‘randy reindeer jumper’ for a cheap office laugh. It may make people laugh as you walk in, but for the rest of the night, you’ll be known as the office idiot.
Girls – be classy, not tarty. Yes, it’s your chance to ditch the formal grey dress and wear something a bit sexier, but don’t go too far. If your outfit is too short or low-cut, you’ll be remembered for the wrong reasons. You don’t need to flash the flesh to impress.

2) Don’t get too drunk
Yes it’s an open bar and everyone’s feeling merry, but just be sensible about your alcohol consumption. When the booze is free, it’s easy to get carried away, so know your limits. Make sure you’ve had something to eat beforehand and try to alternate the wine with water. If you drink too much, you’ll just end up embarrassing yourself or others – it’s really not worth it.

3) Don’t flirt with your boss
No, just no. It’s doesn’t matter if he’s hot, young, has been giving you mixed signals or you just fancy your chances that night – STOP and repeat this phrase in your head: ‘he’s out of bounds’. Trying to seduce the boss will only end in tears (or with you looking for a new job the next day)! It might seem fun at the time, but imagine your sober, awkward self the next day. Even worse – imagine if someone sees you…it’s a situation you really don’t want to be in.

4) Don’t just talk shop
Everyone’s got a life outside of work – so talk about it. From hobbies, to family, friends, holidays and even your favourite haunts. Now’s not the time to boast about your Christmas bonus or any promotion you think is on the cards. Yes you may be out with colleagues, but focus on getting to know them in a relaxed setting.

5) Don’t make any drunken revelations
We all lose our inhibitions when we’ve had a few glasses of vino, but if you gossip, it’ll come back to haunt you. So if you’re having an affair because your wife doesn’t understand you or you know your boss is having a liaison – keep shtum. No one is discreet at office Christmas parties and it’ll probably be the next day’s gossip. Don’t be known as the one who started the Chinese whispers.

6) Don’t start picking a fight with the person you dislike
There’s always somebody in the office that you don’t get on with; maybe they get paid more, maybe they’re the office loud mouth – whatever it is, forget about it. There’s nothing worse than an office punch-up, so even if they provoke you, just walk away, otherwise you’ll both end up looking bad (and maybe in A&E).

7) Don’t spend the whole night with the same person
There’s one important word at office parties; mingling! That’s what it’s all about. It’s the time for you to get to know each other in a relaxed setting. You may have your office best friend, but if you’re glued at the hip, what’s the point of being there?

8) Don’t joke about the boss
If you and someone on your team, share a mutual hatred for the boss, don’t whatever you do start making a joke about his big nose or his moobs. You may think you’re being discreet but after you’ve had a few drinks you may sound like you’ve swallowed a megaphone. Imagine the horror of turning around and seeing your boss (moobs-and-all) standing there glaring at you. It’s not worth the risk. Save the jokes for when you’re out of the office environment!

9) Don’t be controversial in photos
The last thing you want is the nickname of ‘flashing Santa’, and I don’t mean twinkling lights. When the cameras comes out, we can all be exhibitionists and after a few bevvies, we all think we’re hilarious, but just remember, these photos WILL resurface. The dreaded Facebook tag the next day may ruin your Christmas! Be careful!

10) Don’t be a stingy Secret Santa
We all have Secret Santa – but don’t cheat and be a cheapskate as this will be remembered. Just buy a gift that says ‘I’ve got great taste’ and it won’t be forgotten. You’ll be setting the bar sky high for next year.

11) Don’t be a mistletoe waving embarrassment
If there’s someone you fancy at the office, don’t be desperate. Waving a bunch of mistletoe in their face while puckering up will only make you look like the office creep. If there is someone who you fancy, a subtle bit of flirting is fine, but try and read their signals too.

12) Don’t get carried away with the singing and dancing
Yes karaoke can be a lot of fun, but if you start howling down the microphone like hound dog, remember – Elvis has left the building and he ain’t coming back! Similarly, don’t do a strip tease, twerk and dance like an embarrassing uncle at a wedding. You won’t look sexy and everyone will be talking about you the next day for the WRONG reasons.

13) Don’t bring a ‘plus one’ who will misbehave
Sometimes it’s nice to bring someone along rather than turning up solo, but if you’re bringing a date, make sure you’ve been out with them before and know they’re not a loose canon when drunk. If your date is shy on the other hand, don’t abandon them while you’re talking with your colleagues. They may not be good at small talk and this could put them off going to events with you (or even dating you) in the future. If you only talk about work, you’ll bore your date, so try and make it up to them with dinner another time or an extra Christmas treat.

14) Don’t do anything you don’t want others to see
These days there are cameras EVERYWHERE – from security cameras on the wall to people’s smart phones. You may think disappearing into the back office with a co-worker for a bit of tonsil tennis will remain a secret but it’s not a clever move and could cause a lot of embarrassment.

15) If you manage to behave yourself all night…don’t ruin it by drunk texting
So you’ve almost survived your Christmas party and it couldn’t have gone better. You swapped numbers with the colleague you fancy and mentioned meeting up for a drink next week. You’ve got this far – now don’t ruin it all with a series of embarrassing gushing drunken texts about your ‘connection’ and saying how much you like him/her. This could end things before they’ve even begun.

Now you’re armed with the rules – make sure you stick to them. If you do end up getting very drunk, be sure to make it into work the next day however bad your hangover is. If you’ve done something cringeworthy, it’s best to face it and apologise, especially if it was out of character.

So good luck and remember – tis the season to be jolly, so enjoy yourself!

Holiday Gift Guide for the Awkward Early Stages of Dating

Posted: 03 Dec 2014 12:33 PM PST

Terrible-Christmas-Gifts

It is better to give than to receive. Unless, of course, we're talking about oral sex.

Oh, and in one other situation: when it's holiday time and you're in a relationship that has yet to be defined as the ever-elusive “exclusive.”

In this case, the entire gift-giving jam can be as awkward as one of Uncle Len's "accidental" ass grabs during Thanksgiving dinner. The whole ordeal just adds insult to injury, as dating someone new is uncomfortable enough under normal circumstances. There are just so many unanswered questions: Do they like you? Do you like them? Should I text every day? Is it too soon to ask for anal? (Yes.)

But around tinsel time, yet another question gets thrown onto the pile of uncertainties, and it's a biggie:

Am I expected to proffer a gift to my not-quite-significant other, and if so, what am I supposed to get?

You're only barely acquainted with this individual, so how the hell are you to know what they would even like? Or, if you’ve only been out a few times, is a gift even required? What if one of you spends WAY more money than the other? Or the worst — what if one person presents a gift and (gasp!) the other doesn't?

So, so many questions. Good thing for spiced rum.

To assist in your quest for the perfect (or at least not completely mortifying) gift, I've put together some rough guidelines. Make note: the recommendations are different for men and women, because generally speaking, the sexes have differing views when it comes to gift giving.

Gifts for Your Not-Boyfriend

I realize I am generalizing here, but in my experience, women have a tendency to go a wee bit overboard when it comes to giving presents. A few years ago I went out of my way, searched high and low and spent far too much of my paycheck on a thoughtful gift for a guy I had been casually dating for several months (he kept saying didn't want to "rush it"). In return, he got me an enormous bouquet of nothing.

He said he was broke, felt a little guilty and was touched at my efforts, but I could tell it was the beginning of the end. Because this meant I cared far more than he did – and we both knew it. Sure enough, he bailed about a month later.

Sadly, many of my girlfriends have had similar experiences. Guys can get freaked out and feel pressured if you lavish gifts upon them too early in a relationship. So, my advice to the ladies on holiday gift giving to new dudes is this: less is more. And if you get caught empty-handed when he proffers a present, you can always whip up some last minute blow job coupons, and trust me, he'll be happy as a clam.

Dating one month or less:

1. Nada. Unless you're one of those nutty couples who rush into things at Kardashian speed, nothing is expected if you've been dating less than a month.

2. Baked goods. If you feel oddly compelled to give something, bake him some homemade banana bread or a pie. He's a guy, he'll dig it. Unless he's a pastry chef.

Dating one to three months:

1. Sexy lingerie. For yourself. Wear it one night and wrap yourself in a big bow. If things don't work out, you keep the mesh teddy.

2. DVD or book. Pick a non-romantic genre, like comedy, action or hardcore porn (yes, that last one was a joke – can we get a sarcasm font up in here?). Don't spend a lot of money, maybe $20. Remember, you can always add BJ coupons if necessary.

Dating more than three months:

This is tricky. If it's been more than three months and you have still not had the exclusivity talk, it's hard to tell what he's thinking. A few weeks before, feel it out with a casual "So, what's on your Christmas list?" If he blows it off, play it safe and stick with the guidelines above. If he asks about yours and hints that he might get you something, you might be safe to go a little further, like:

1. Concert tickets. But only if you get them dirt cheap on Goldstar and it's a band you like, too.

2. Something related to alcohol. A flask, a beer mug, a respectable bottle of booze.

3. A brick of cocaine. Just kidding. That's WAY too expensive.

AVOID: Anything cutesy or romantic, socks, underwear, watches, clothing, a transcript of your first text conversation embroidered on a pillow.

Gifts for Your Not-Girlfriend

Guys, I don't envy you. The pressure is on. In the eyes of a woman, a gift is not simply a gift, but a declarative statement that tells her everything she needs to know on the subject of how you really feel about her.

These days, the phrase "it's the thought that counts" has become somewhat of a punch line. But truthfully, for women (okay, most women), the thought actually IS the key to finding the right gift. And it should be a thought that lasted more than three seconds, because ladies want to know that you've put a modicum of effort into selecting something just for her that you felt she would appreciate. If you go the highly impersonal fruit basket or gift card route, it can come off as lazy or like you just don't care.

So, how do you know if she will appreciate it? Hint: start paying attention NOW. What does she like? What are her hobbies? Notice if she comments on something while you're out together, for example, her love of Paul Frank novelties or how she thinks caramel is superior to chocolate on the flavor spectrum. Remember these little nuggets and use them to inform your choice of gift.

Of course, since she is still not your "official" girlfriend, you don't want to go hell bent bonkers either. In other words, don't go to Jared just yet. Women can get freaked out, too, you know.

Dating One Month or Less:

1. Nada. This one is the same for women as it is for men. If you've only just begun dating, a gift really isn't necessary. If you want to err on the side of caution, you could always get something and then return it if she doesn't give you anything.

2. Mix tape. Well, more like a mix CD. I think these are adorable, because it means you took the time to create something special just for her. Of course, this gift works best if the two of you like the same music. Don't assume she’ll love your death metal mashup just because you’re president of the Cannibal Corpse fan club.

3. A small memento. Normally, I'm not a fan of gifting dust-collecting tchotchkes, but if you're just starting to date, something cute could work – IF AND ONLY IF it has some sort of significance and is not just some random bobblehead or something. For example, maybe on your first date you saw some ducks and she named that one little duckling Darrell because he looked like a Darrell. A rubber duckie (named Darrell, duh) could be a sweet reminder of your first date and she'll totally go "Awww!"

Dating one to three months:

This is when you should have a better feel for her tastes, and the gift you choose should reflect the fact that you have noticed. These prezzies should come with a story. For example:

1. Spa stuff (e.g., scented lotions, lavender oil, eye mask). This gift without a story could seem very unimaginative. But if you give her a good reason for the gift, it changes everything. For example, "I know you've been super stressed at work, so I thought you could use a little pampering." Or, "I remember you mentioned how much you love lavender, so I'd hoped you would enjoy this lavender massage lotion."

2. Bottle of wine. Again, this would only apply if she is a wine aficionado. Did she mention she loves a nice Bordeaux? Well, there you go. Does she like champagne? Get her the good stuff. If you're clueless, go to BevMo and ask for help. Spring for one of those fancy wine bottle gift bags.

3. Book. Something in hardcover, on a topic she's interested in: the works of Van Gogh, photography, Bonsai gardening. Have you been listening?

Dating More Than Three Months:

If you've been dating this long and you're not yet exclusive, then, uh, why? Do you want to be her boyfriend but don't know how to bring it up? Or do you want to keep things casual? If it's the former, you can step it up in the gift department. If it's the latter, then go more conservative (and you should probably also have that conversation with your lady friend if you haven't already).

1. Event tickets: Tickets to a concert, play or other type of show that you will both enjoy is always a sure bet.

2. Future activity: Sign the two of you up for a vegan cooking class, trapeze lessons, or if you're feeling really saucy, a weekend getaway.

3. Accessories: A high-quality hat, scarf or gloves. WARNING: you may only resort to this option if you are fairly fashion-forward yourself and have a very good sense of her style. If in doubt, ask a woman her age who dresses in a similar manner to that of your lady friend. (And don't flirt with her.)

Again, the secret here is to make sure each gift is accompanied by a reason why you thought she would personally love it.

More examples (because I know guys need help in this department): If her phone case broke and she loves elephants, give her an elephant-encrusted phone case. If she burns candles every time you go to her place, get her some fancy scented candles. If she's into clean living, organic stuff is a good bet.

Be sure to explain your thought process as you present her with this precious offering. She will appreciate it and you will score major points.

AVOID: Lingerie, jewelry, clothing, cologne, stuffed animals (we are grown women), a vibrator, anything sexual actually, the latest incarnation of World of Warcraft.

Now, I realize some of you may be scoffing, saying to yourself, these ideas suck! It's okay, I'm not offended. I realize these will not apply to everyone. At the end of the day, you know your not-significant other better than I do (because I don't know them at all), so if you just KNOW she would go gaga over a Target gift card (cough) or you are POSITIVELY CERTAIN he would adore a frilly framed photo of the two of you (you sure, girl?), then by all means, go for it. This is merely a loose guide for the frustrated and clueless, and it gives you somewhere to start.

Above all, keep in mind that while gift giving to new flames can be stressful, it is indeed a problem of the first world order. Don't take it too seriously and try to have fun with it, because this will all seem like child's play next year when you're a real couple and you have to introduce them to your crackpot family.

Baggage Reclaim: Empowering advice for helping you offload your baggage & discover the great you that already exists.

Baggage Reclaim: Empowering advice for helping you offload your baggage & discover the great you that already exists.

There’s a difference between personality and character

Posted: 03 Dec 2014 02:49 PM PST

Earlier this year (I can't believe it's already December), I explained how 'charming' tends to be a precursor to code red problems. Mistaking charm as being indicative of other characteristics and values is an example of where we fall into the trap of mistaking personality for character, which are not one and the same thing.

Personality is about persona and that ultimately comes down to the qualities and characteristics that we want to put across but this may not always be the same as those which represent our true and consistent character. It's about 'outside' and 'indoor' behaviour or should I say, the public versus private persona.

A person can have a 'winning' personality because they know how to get on and put their best self across. It's like those people who are amazing interviewees that get almost every job they go for but who struggle to actually do the job and deliver on what they said that they could be and do. You're scratching your head wondering where the hell that person who you met in those interviews has disappeared to. Lots of us know how to act socially, especially when we don't have to be around these people all of the time but as relationships progress, we do have to interact in a variety of situations that give us a true sense of who a person is but also, once we are spending a great deal of time around them (such as in a romantic relationship) and they unfold into their true selves, that's where you see character – the mental and moral qualities that distinguish a person.

You don't need mental and moral qualities to be 'funny' – just ask some of the dodgier comedians out there – and you don't need mental and moral qualities to be charming and popular – just ask some of the famous people of this world whose reputations are in stark contrast to what they get up to behind closed doors. It's also safe to say that a person could be incredibly intelligent but lack morals, and a classic mistake that us BR folk make is assuming that intelligence is synonymous with morals. We might be very intelligent and a number of other things and have strong moral fibre but that's not to say that if we met somebody who worked in the same field as us and was super intelligent, that they would share our core values.

We tend to get impressed by personality more so than we do character. This is due to the associations we have with the particular qualities and characteristics that we admire. If those associations and any assumptions that we've made off of the back of them lead us into a blind spot, it's important to evaluate these beliefs and get conscious about where we're jumping to a conclusion that's setting us up for pain.

Some people are consistent with their personality and character so you don't experience a rapid departure from either one whether you're around others or one-on-one. They're also like this when no one is around. They feel congruent to you and if anything, their personality is enhanced by what you've come to learn through experience about their character. It's a lot easier to copilot a relationship with someone who is like this because you know where you stand. You know who you're going to get from one day to the next.

Some people chop and change what they're putting across to suit their audience and especially when that divergence between personality and character leaves you with a What The… Headspin, it's incredibly disconcerting especially when there may be a harem of people out there who based on the persona this person puts across and the reputation they've cultivated (or had assumed by others), these people may be swearing up and down about their "character" even though you have first hand experience of something entirely different. You cannot know where you stand with this person because they're inconsistent. It's important to note that your experience of them is what you need to use determine whether or not to proceed – no one else has to take your journey and live your life!

Some people pretend that they have a matchy personality and character. In much the same way that hair dye grows out and the roots start to show, people unfold and a person who is playacting at being of a certain character does gradually show signs of it if we're listening and watching.

Over the years of writing BR, I've heard from so many people who are genuinely perplexed as to how somebody can be helping out at the old folks home, doing charity this and charity that, popular in various circles and yet not so kind and generous to them. They wonder what's "wrong" with them to invite such a different flavour of behaviour but what we forget when we start blaming ourselves for what may be someone's mistreatment or the fact that their actions and words don't match, is that if a person's character is what we say and assume it to be, that's not just a public or specific person thing; it's their identity because it matters to their values.

Character is what you get with actions, and security comes in knowing that actions and words are matching.

Character is what you get with actions, and security comes in knowing that actions and words are matching. If you don't know where you stand with a person, that's a big damn clue right there that you've been mixing up personality with character. If what you're met with is promises and intentions that don't stack up, you've been enjoying their persona but other aspects of their character and habits have been interfering with the delivery of those said things.

Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you

Sometimes we get too carried away with personality. Fun and funny for example, are wonderful qualities to enjoy in a person but they're not an automatic precursor to desirable characteristics and values. It's not as if only relationship worthy people can make us laugh for instance (the same can also be said about 'attractive' and 'intelligent' people) and this is where the difference not only between personality and character shows itself but also how core values distinguish themselves from secondary ones (appearance, common interests etc).

It's not as if only relationship worthy people can make us laugh…

Reputation is a widespread belief that someone or something has a particular characteristic and it's important to note that there are people who spend a fortune on reputation management. Some of us are engaging in reputation management even when it's only one or a a few people, and that can cause us to wear a mask because we worry a great deal about what other people think and also about whether who we are and what we do is "right". It gets in the way of us being authentic.

In understanding whether you're compatible with somebody, get past the pomp and fanfare. Character really expresses itself through vulnerability because not only do our intimate relationships require intimacy for depth but dealing with life's inevitables such as conflict, criticism, disappointment and loss, require us to dig into our character in order to respond. You get a really good sense of who a person is when you tell (or show) them no or when things don't go their way. That's character! Pay attention and keep your feet in reality. Don't get swept up in the hype whether it's coming from them, others or you, because you cannot make what may be a big life decision (deciding who to spend what may be the rest of your life with) based on what may be packaging without the contents to back it up.

When it comes to personality, there's nothing wrong with being attracted to particular qualities but don't assume that those things you admire are an automatic precursor to other values and that they're telling you all that you need to know about their character.
